The ‘Tell Me’ project by People First Borders, is providing free training in easy read.
The project has been funded by the Disabled People’s User-Led Organisations (DPULOs) Programme, run by the Office for Disability Issues.
The format is easy to understand because it uses:
- simple, jargon-free language
- short sentences
- pictures
Support Worker, Mary Daykin, explained: “Many people miss out on vital information because it is written in ways that do not work for them. We would urge local authorities, health boards and other organisations to provide more information in an easy read format.
“Easy-read is useful not only for people with a learning disability, but for older people, those who cannot read well, and those who have English as a second language.”
Training dates and towns are:
- Monday 31 March – Duns
- Tuesday 15 April – Jedburgh
- Wednesday 1 May – Kelso
- Monday 12 May – Selkirk
- Thursday 15 May – Galashiels
- Tuesday 3 June – Eyemouth.
The training is free. It is particularly aimed at anyone who works or volunteers in health and social care in the Scottish Borders. However, anyone with an interest in learning how to produce easy read documents is welcome to attend.
