Community groups in the Scottish Borders will be able to make the 2014 Commonwealth Games their own, thanks to grants from the Big Lottery’s Celebrate and 2014 Communities funds for a range of unique sports, arts, heritage and community 2014 Games inspired activities.
Borders Voluntary Older People’s Service has received £9950 for the ‘Big Celebration Gathering 2014’ project, It will bring older people in the Scottish Borders together for a Commonwealth Games culture event. The event will allow isolated older people to come together to enjoy a range of events including a Commonwealth Panto, meal, quiz and fireworks display.
Play Borders gets £9170 to deliver a full day of activities promoting sport and physical activities. The project will use the Commonwealth Games as inspiration to engage people with sports and also in volunteering to support local clubs. Access will be free and activities will include archery, badminton, cycling, athletics, kick boxing, judo, hockey, gymnastics, bowls, rugby, table tennis, footballs, floorball, swimming and dancing.
Scottish Borders Council – Scottish Borders Youth Voices has been awarded £9994 to develop young people’s’ skills and understanding of young people and youth democracy in Commonwealth countries.
Innerleithen MTB Racing received £1877 to increase the capacity of their Kids Innerleith Cycling Club to provide cycling activities for children.
Melrose Rugby Football Club gets £7000 for a Commowealth project aimed at young people aged 5-17.
